Outside the window at work, and across the parking lot, is a cut-through for high power lines. Across the street is a small nature preserve. I position myself to look out the window as much as possible. Aside from relieving my claustrophobia, I have been able to witness quite an array of interesting sights.
Right now, a small tussle for supremacy is being held by a mocking bird and a blue jay. The mocking bird has stationed itself in this one bush at least since the beginning of Febuary. On some of the coldest days we have had, he has perched there, looking rather miserable, yet determined to wait there as if it was his duty. Last week, a blue jay showed up and has been taking the mockingbird's spot when he can. There has been no fighting that I have seen, it seems that the jay just wants to claim the top roost for himself. My mind wants the mockingbird to win out. After all, he put in the time!
For the last week, I have also noticed a few turkey vultures. They have been arriving singly, but I know that soon there will be several teetering in the breezes over the ravine.
I will be listening for the spring peepers, those tiny frogs that truly herald the arrival of warmer weather! They are music to my ears.
