Last night I finally got to hear the spring peepers. The temperature had risen to 70 degrees during the day, and as I drove by a couple of marshy areas, I could hear the peepers in full chorus. This is a sound that really says "spring" to me. I could listen to it for quite a while.
I got to thinking about the real reason those tiny frogs sing, and of course it's to attract a mate. How on earth does a female frog choose her mate in such a racket? How does one male stand out from the rest? It reminded me of a crowded club scene, where everyone is hoping to "get lucky" tonight, and finally the female frog says "To heck with it; you'll do"!
This morning as I was driving to work, I saw a flock of turkey on the side of the road. A few were actually in the road, and blocking the entrance to an off-ramp. There were two toms and three or four hens. The toms were all puffed up and displaying their tails. I couldn't help but think that they were behaving like teenagers; showing off for the girls and oblivious to the danger that could literally hit them at any moment.
