I realised recently that I actually like grooming the horses. Lots of people find it to be a chore, right up there with mucking. I like to take a dirt covered, tangle-tailed horse and make her look beautiful again. It's nice to rythmically curry and brush, and I love it when I get to an itchy spot and they lean into it so I can keep scratching. They almost let out an audible "ahhhh". It makes me feel like I'm a trusted friend.
I also feel satisfied when I'm able to spot a problem and fix it. Just yesterday, I found a raw spot at the base of Nia's tail, where she's been rubbing it. It was small and easily taken care of, so hopefully she won't make it worse.
Now that it's finally not raining, the horses will be outside today. I know they'll roll and get dirty all over again. That's OK, it's what they do.
