It occured to me that the kind of horse I want is the equine equivalent of a golden retriever! Good -looking, smart, willing and mellow. My favorite horse of all time, Susan, was a thoroughbred, and only lacked the mellow part! Well, she could be calm most of the time, but she'd spook without warning. She knew her stuff, though. By the time I came along, Susan had several pony-clubbers under her girth, and knew whatshe could get away with, and who she could pull it on. She was perfectly safe to use for pony rides for my daughter, who was between two and six years of age while we rode Susan. Her daughter, Bessie, was cute, but stubborn and sometimes downright nasty.
Now I'm riding Dakota, a beautiful brown and white Paint mare. She is always "looking for trouble" with her ears pricked forward, looking all around. She will stand stock still when she sees a deer. Anything coming up behind her freaks her out. She rears and strikes out. That bugs me no end. It could get dangerous. I have a plan to start "bomb proofing" her. Here's hoping she will be responsive to it.
