One of the joys of having grandchildren is being able to pass down the things I love to them. Ella had a birthday a couple of weeks ago, and I gave her the pink lure and pink tackle box I had promised her for learning to cast. She was itching to use them, so last week we went fishing. Now, at this stage, I don't actually expect to catch fish with the two kids splashing and banging around the way they do, but we have a good time. Ella showed off her casting skills and was intrigued with the way the lure worked. I told her that she got it because she earned it. I could see the pride in her face.
After fishing from the dock for a while, both kids wanted to walk back to the waterfall. I had this misguided idea that I would actually catch something over there, but it was not to be.
First off, I started casting my line without paying attention to Ella, who promptly got her line caught in a bush. Walking over to fix her problem, I slipped on some mud and crashed down on the riverbank. I haven't been that covered in mud in a long time!
After a few more casts, Ella's lure got hung up on some tough underwater weeds. It took me a while, but using a long forked stick, I was finally able to dislodge it. By now, both kids were interested in throwing sticks in the water to watch them go over the falls.
Ella's comment was, "I think I'd just like to use a worm and wait for the fish to come to me".
I wonder if anyone makes pink bobbers?
