Pat is the owner of the horses I ride. About two years ago she had a nasty fall off her biggest horse, Shadow. He spooked violently and unexpectedly, and she crashed to the ground quite hard. She didn't break any bones, but it really shook her confidence.
This spring, she got on Dakota, the paint, for a few minutes at a standstill, but she got nervous that Dakota would buck, which she is known to do. A week or two ago, she rode Lady, the Tennessee Walker, down to the end of the driveway and back.
Today she gave me no indication that she was going to ride, until I already had Dakota in the ring, warming up. She said," I'm going to change", and sure enough, a few minutes later she was grooming Lady and getting ready to ride with me! Dakota is getting better at letting us open the gate from her back, so that's what I did, thinking that Pat would want to warm up first. She decided that since Lady is really not a problem, we would just go out.
One of the many things I love about riding at this barn is that there are trails right down the driveway. Pat suggested where we should go as I was leading. She showed me some trails that I hadn't explored before, which was great.
Both horses were great. Dakota seems to be getting better around cars, which is a big deal for me. I really hope we can get her past her fear. Lady was getting into her walking pace, and Pat was fine with it. She showed me how she was able to keep the reins loose, which I can't always do with Lady!
So it was a momentous day for Pat, and I got to share in it.
