Pine needles and pond water

There a few things that signify summer to me. One is the scent of sun-warmed pine needles underfoot, and another is the scent of a fresh water fishing pond. I was able to revel in both today, with a trip to Browning Mill pond. Being Memorial Day weekend, there were several families enjoying the area. Lots of kids were fishing from the area that was formerly a beach. One family had a pop-up gazebo and had taken a prime corner on the water. I kept walking and took the trail to the far end of the pond. There is a dam there, and I have seen fish hanging around the deeper water.
I started with a spinner, and although I wasn't catching anything, I was enjoying the peace. One cast took my lure into a tree, and I couldn't get it out. Having forgotten my knife, I just kept pulling, thinking that maybe the line would break. Instead, my rod broke! The tip fell into the pond. It was my good rod, and I'm sad to see it go. It was like a good friend that I've known for 20 years.
Fortunately I also had my cheapie collapsible rod with me. I was able to keep fishing and enjoying the day. Didn't catch anything, though. As the saying goes "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work."
